Rhino pills are male enhancement supplements sold without a prescription. The FDA has found hidden sildenafil in many of them. Those undeclared drugs can drop blood pressure to dangerous levels, especially if you take nitrates.
They are often sold as natural remedies to increase libido, stamina, and erection strength. You might find them as pills or gummies, on websites and in some retail stores. Sellers promise noticeable results without a prescription.
The FDA has advised people not to buy or use specific Rhino products after laboratory analysis found undeclared prescription drugs. Platinum 69000 Rhino 69 contained sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra (FDA 2023). Rhino 69 Gummy contained tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis (FDA 2024).
Sildenafil and tadalafil may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, such as nitroglycerin, and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. People with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease often take nitrates (FDA 2023). Sildenafil is also contraindicated with guanylate cyclase stimulators (pulmonary hypertension drugs) such as riociguat (VIAGRA label).
When sildenafil is taken as the approved drug, the most common reactions (≥2%) include headache, flushing, dyspepsia (upset stomach), abnormal vision, nasal congestion, back pain, myalgia (muscle pain), nausea, dizziness, and rash (VIAGRA label). A hidden-drug product can produce those same effects without a known dose.
These products are typically marketed as dietary supplements and are often represented as "all natural." The FDA cannot test every product sold that way (FDA 2023).
A clinician can look for the cause of sexual dysfunction before anyone writes a prescription. Men with ED should have a medical, sexual, and psychosocial history, a physical examination, and selected laboratory tests. ED is also a risk marker for cardiovascular disease and other conditions that may need treatment (AUA Clinical Principles) (AUA 2018).
The AUA says men with ED should be told about an FDA-approved oral PDE5 inhibitor (a prescription erection medicine) such as sildenafil (Viagra) or tadalafil (Cialis), including benefits and risks, unless it is contraindicated (Strong Recommendation; Evidence Level: Grade B) (AUA 2018). Morning testosterone should be measured (Moderate Recommendation; Evidence Level: Grade C). If testosterone is low, testosterone replacement therapy is a separate decision. Testosterone alone is not an ED treatment unless T is low.
Rhino pills sold as supplements have been found to contain hidden sildenafil or tadalafil. Those drugs can drop blood pressure to dangerous levels, especially with nitrates. If erections are a problem, a clinician can evaluate you and, when it is appropriate, prescribe an FDA-approved PDE5 inhibitor. AlphaMD providers review your history before prescribing.
