How do I give an intramuscular injection?

Back to Medications & treatment

Short answer

Draw your dose with the 21G needle, swap to the 25G needle, inject into your thigh or glute at a 90° angle, and put the needle straight into a sharps container.

Intramuscular means into the muscle. You'll use the injection kit.

  1. Wash your hands. Wipe the vial top and your injection site with an alcohol pad and let them dry.
  2. Attach the 21G drawing needle and draw your dose.
  3. Swap to the 25G injection needle and push out any air.
  4. Inject into your thigh or glute at a 90° angle.
  5. Don't recap the needle. Put it straight into your sharps container.
  6. Use a different spot each time.
